You probably never thought this day would come. A Carolina without Dr. Herb seems unimaginable! Alas, we must say goodbye to a great person who worked tirelessly to ensure Carolina was a welcoming place to everyone. Recently, Dr. Herb announced his intent to retire. Over the last 30-40 years, Dr. Herb has touched the lives of countless students, parents, staff and faculty. We will all miss his unwavering support, genuine personality and calming demeanor on our campus.
We invite you to comment to leave well wishes and memories of Dr. Herb.
Mr. Davis. You can truly walk away from this job and repeatedly hear "Well done my good and faithful servant"
ReplyDeleteThere are so many of us who are indebted to you for helping to open the door for each of us to the greatest educational and personal growth opportunity that money can buy (thank you, Mr. Pogue) :-) Know that you have left a lasting imprint on the University, the state and this nation.

Dr. Herb,
ReplyDeleteThank you, thank you, thank you! I so appreciate you coming to my high school back in the early 80's and recruiting me to come to UNC. Your unwavering support and encouragement while i was on campus, especially when we just happen to run into each other. You always demonstrated a love and concern for students, and especially minority students on a predominantly white campus. I will always treasure fond memories of you, sir.
Sincerely,
Jathan Barrett 89,96
Well Herb,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on a great career and a well-deserved retirement. Carolina will not be the same without you because you helped make it a home away from home for so many of us. November 1972, I remember meeting you and Paul in the basement of Craig. That night I made a friend that has been a friend for a lot of years. God Bless you and yours!

It would be very difficult for you to remember all the students who you have met and had impact on their lives but you have done this. I met you my junior year in high school and that was in 1982. I remember you telling my mother how I would fit in at Carolina and that you would be accessible. She felt reassured and I felt impressed that a brotha could have this kind of juice at Carolina! Enjoy retirement and know that your works have not been in vain. May God continue to bless you.

Dr. Herb- Thank you for your tireless efforts, your undying support and your life-long example to all of us who attended The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. You are a champion, a leader- a mighty man who had a mighty purpose. May God's fullest blessings be upon you now, henceforth and forevermore.

Carolina without Dr. Herb Davis?! I surely can't believe it! While I was an undergrad, I remember seeing Herb riding around campus on his bike and he always had a smile and a kind word. I didn't know who he was and the role he played in my being accepted into Carolina. I think students take for granted the people who read their applications and make the most important decision to allow us to experience THE best university in the whole wide world! After having the opportunity to work with Herb from 2000-2004, I got to see first hand the dedication he has for the admission process and especially in minority recruitment and retention. He is an amazing mentor and I feel blessed that I was able to learn from the best in the field.
ReplyDeleteDr.Herb Davis,
ReplyDeleteI am at a loss for words. You have meant so much to me over the years, I only wish I could have spent more time talking to you AFTER I went over. As my Dean of Pledgees on the "First" Psi Delta line, I learned so much that Saturday afternoon I spent with you discussing my future and how Omega would play a part. The long nights and lessons learned during that time have helped me through ANYTHING life has thrown at me over the years. I look forward to seeing you when I come to Chapel Hill in the years to come for Saturday football games. Please contact me offline at JQDogUNC@aol.com.
The University is losing a special person who I am privileged to call my friend.

I am so proud to have this opportunity to express my gratitude and appreciation for Dr. Herb. Dr. Davis, you were right there with me, from day one, as I made my transition to and through Carolina. The campus will never be the same without your caring and compassionate nature that made students know that Carolina was home. Blessings on all of your future endeavors and if no one ever tells you, you made a HUGE impact on the lives of others at Carolina, especially mine!

Hi Herb! When's the retirement? In any case, congratulations! Meetings were always the most interesting when you led them, and working with you was fun and a great learning experience. Hopefully I can stop by for a visit before you retire.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your fast today,
Oren
Herb, it was such a pleasure to work with you, to learn from you, and witness firsthand the difference you made in the lives of so many young people. You may be leaving Carolina but your legacy at Carolina will go in through the students you mentored and advised as well as their children. Good luck, God bless, and Go Heels!
ReplyDeleteDr. Herb Davis will truly be miss. I remember when he came Fayetteville, NC he took the time to talk to my mom and promise her, that her baby would be ok! He was also the first person to congratulate me when I got accepted to graduate school. We will miss you Dr. Davis
ReplyDeleteGreetings Dr, Davis (Herb):
ReplyDeleteFirst and foremost, congratulations are in order as you embark upon retirement. Retiring from a successful and storied career creates the opportunity for complete self reflection. Herb let me personally state that your journey (thirty five years) was a total embodiment of class. Carolina possesses a rich tradition and heritage. Your collective body of work in the Admissions Office at Carolina exemplified your total commitment to excellence. That in itself resonates with me and speaks volumes. Education and the promotion of educational initiatives are paramount in a modern global technological society. Herb, your pioneering efforts have enabled individuals from all socioeconomic statuses to graduate, from one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the world. That in itself is clearly one important accomplishment that any educator and or academician should appreciate. Personally, I would like to thank you for keeping the information superhighway open regarding Carolina’s educational initiatives. The paradigm shifts associated with the competitive nature of admissions have evolved over the course of the years. Herb, you and your colleagues have met those challenges; thus enabling Carolina to remain a premier academic institution.
Strategically, you played an integral role in diversity initiatives. Your overall judgment and decision making was fair and impartial. Fairness is critically important in the overall professional growth and development of our future leaders. Additionally, your duties and responsibilities during my tenure at Carolina extended beyond the edifice of the Admissions Office. Herb, you and the late Dr. Paul Woods served as advisors/mentors for The Psi Delta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., On behalf of Psi Delta Chapter and “The Six Knights of Destiny”(Fall 83’), we want to say thanks. Truthfully, we appreciate your inspirational leadership. Herb, during your tenure at Carolina, you have served as a “father figure”, mentor and a role model. More importantly, you were a “friend”. We will never forget your leadership, guidance, and direction. Ironically, your retirement from UNC falls on the centennial of our great fraternal organization. However, your loyalty, dedication, and support will be remembered for a life time. We wish you the best in your future endeavors. It is our sincere hope that your commitment to educational and academic excellence continues in other platforms. Thanks again,
Best regards and fraternally yours,
Charles Pinnix

ReplyDeleteI just want to take you back for a second to fall, 1974 when I met you and I was #5 of the Terrible Smokin' Ten line of the Psi Delta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. I have much admiration and respect for you and I celebrate your well-deserved retirement. As fate would have it, after 20 yrs as in-house corporate counsel, four years ago, I accepted a position as Asst. I share your passion and dedication to student services and I hope I can provide the kind of quality you provdied to the lives of so many students.

You have touched so many lives in so many ways. You can look in the mirror and truly say that you have had a positive impact on the lives of so many.
Thank you for being such a wonderful role model and friend. You, along with our late Brother Paul Davis, are the reason that I am an Omega today.
As you move on to the next chapter of your life, the only thing that I know for sure is that it will be well written! Enjoy your well deserved retirement - you have so richly earned & deserved it.
